Nicknamed the “Venice of the Alps,” Annecy is a city best savored at the pace of the pedal. Between its flower-lined canals, its turquoise lake, and its majestic mountains, cycling is without a doubt the best way to miss nothing while avoiding traffic jams.

Have you just picked up your ride from one of our bike rental shops in Annecy ? Here is the ideal route to discover the 6 landmarks that make the soul of our beautiful city.

1. The Palais de l’Île (The Old Prison)

It’s the quintessential postcard image. Located in the middle of the Thiou canal, this monument shaped like a ship’s prow has successively been a lordly residence, a courthouse, and a prison.

  • Cycling tip: The area is pedestrian-only, but very accessible. Park your bike for a moment on the quay to take the perfect photo before continuing along the canals.

2. The Château d’Annecy

Overlooking the old town, this former residence of the Counts of Geneva and the Dukes of Savoy-Nemours is a must-see. The castle rises above the tiled rooftops and offers a sweeping view over the medieval lanes.

  • Cycling tip: It’s a climb! This is the perfect opportunity to test the electric assist on our VAE (Electric-assist bikes) to reach the top without breaking a sweat.

3. Lovers’ Bridge

A romantic link between the Jardins de l’Europe and the Pâquier, this early-20th-century wrought-iron bridge offers a unique perspective over the Vassé canal and the lake.

  • Cycling tip: This is the official starting point of the cycle path that runs along the lake. An unmissable stop to admire the typical wooden boats moored just below.

4. The Town Hall and the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse

As you ride along Quai Eustache Chappuis, you’ll pass the majestic neoclassical Town Hall. Right next door, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse, with its 16th-century bell tower, bears witness to the city’s intense religious past.

  • Cycling tip: The square in front of the church is wide and open—perfect for a short break and to watch the buzz of the city center.

5. The Basilica of the Visitation

Perched on the Crêt du Maure, this basilica is visible from across the entire urban area. Its 72-meter-high bell tower is a true beacon. Inside, the stained glass windows and mosaics are stunning.

  • Cycling tip: For the more sporty (or on an e-bike), the climb up to the Basilica is a superb stage before heading back down toward the Semnoz forest or returning to the lake.

6. The Impérial Palace

Following the cycle path toward Annecy-le-Vieux, you’ll come upon this Belle Époque gem. This majestic palace, inaugurated in 1913, is surrounded by sumptuous gardens and faces the vast blue expanse of the lake.

  • Cycling tip: Take advantage of the wide park paths around the Impérial to ride safely and admire the monumental architecture of this historic establishment.
