City bike vs electric bike: which one should you choose for your ride in Annecy?

You’re planning your stay and one question often comes up when it’s time to stop by our 3 bike rental shops in Annecy, Annecy-le-Vieux or Sevrier: should you go for the charm of a classic city bike or the power of an electric-assist bike (e-bike)?

Between the cobblestones of the Old Town, the flat lakeside cycle path and the climbs up to the viewpoints, the choice depends above all on your plans. Here’s our guide to help you decide.

1. The Comfort VTC bike: For strolling and enjoying the city centre

The non-electric (classic) bike with an Open or Closed frame is the perfect ally for those who want to take their time and stay within an urban area, or along the lakefront.

• What is it best for?Going to the Old Town market, having a picnic on the Pâquier lawn or heading to Albigny beach, or riding along or around the lake.

• Key benefits:

  • Lightweight:Easier to handle if you need to get over a small step or park it.

  • Price:It’s the most economical option for a half-day or full-day rental.

  • A “pleasure” effort:Perfect for gentle exercise on flat stretches.

• The limit:As soon as the road climbs (towards the Castle or the Basilica), your calves will be put to work!

2. The Electric Bike (VAE): The king of the Lake Loop

The electric bike has become the undisputed star in Annecy—and not for nothing.

• What is it best for?Doing the40 km loop around the lakewithout ending up exhausted, or effortlessly climbing up to the heights to admire the view.

• Key benefits:

  • Accessibility:Whether you’re athletic or not, the lake is yours. A headwind on the way back from Doussard? A distant memory thanks to the assistance.

Questions to ask yourself before renting

1. Am I going to do the full loop around the lake? If so, we strongly recommend an e-bike so you can enjoy the scenery without suffering from fatigue on the way back.

2. Do I have children with me? If you’re towing a child trailer (1 to 2, max 40 kg), only the Comfort hybrid bikes (VTC) remain suitable to keep a smooth ride around Lake Annecy.

3. What’s my plan after cycling? If you’ve planned a hike or a fine-dining restaurant, an e-bike lets you arrive feeling fresh and ready, with no trace of sweat!
